How Sculptra works

Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). Unlike hyaluronic acid filler, it does not create volume by filling space. It stimulates the skin to produce new collagen over the following weeks and months. The result is a gradual restoration of volume and firmness that looks like your own, because it is.

Who it suits

Treatment course

Sculptra is usually given as a course of sessions spaced several weeks apart. The number depends on the degree of volume loss. Some early fullness from the treatment fluid fades within days, and the real result then builds over the following months. Results commonly last much longer than hyaluronic acid filler, often around two years. Following aftercare instructions, including massage, matters with this product.

Sculptra or filler?

Hyaluronic acid filler gives immediate, precise shape, for example on the lips or jawline. Sculptra gives gradual, overall collagen support. Many plans combine both. Dr. Bahar recommends the right balance after a facial assessment.

Side effects, risks and suitability

Common and usually short-lived

Swelling, tenderness and bruising for several days. Early fullness from the mixing fluid fades within days, before the real result builds.

Less common but important

Small lumps under the skin (papules or nodules) are a recognised risk of poly-L-lactic acid; correct dilution, placement and the massage routine reduce it. Infection is uncommon. Sculptra is not used in the lips or directly under the eyes.

When it may not be suitable

Pregnancy or breastfeeding, active skin infection, a tendency to keloid or raised scarring, or a known allergy to any ingredient. People wanting an instant change are usually better suited to hyaluronic acid filler.

Your consultation covers your medical history, medicines and allergies, so Dr Bahar can advise whether a treatment is right for you.

Downtime and aftercare

Massage the area as instructed (often several times a day for about five days). Avoid make-up for the rest of the day and intense heat for a day or two. Most people return to work the next day.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Sculptra last?

Because it stimulates your own collagen, results commonly last much longer than hyaluronic acid filler, often around two years.

When will I see Sculptra results?

Gradually. Collagen builds over the weeks and months after each session, with the full result developing over a few months.

How many Sculptra sessions do I need?

Usually a course of sessions several weeks apart. The number depends on your degree of volume loss and is planned at the consultation.

Is Sculptra a filler?

Not in the usual sense. It is a biostimulator. Rather than filling space, it stimulates your skin to produce its own collagen.
